Step 1
Establish the right educational placement for your child.

Set up a meeting with teaching staff after a week or two of school, allowing the staff to have had time to get to know your child.
In the meeting discuss plans for the school year, answer questions and discuss your expectations for your child's education. Be sure to let the staff know of child's special behaviors and/or tips to help your child learn. This is separate from an IEP meeting. -
Step 3
Develop a rapport with teacher/IEP team. Determine means of communication through out the school year. Examples: email, phone calls, notebook sent back and fourth to school. Make sure you communicate daily, weekly or bi weekly. Offer to help at home with projects or assignments when necessary.

Step 4
Understand your child's homework. Re teach your child at home. Re read history together, act out parts, be creative, take the same subjects and review them together.

Step 5
Reward you child for his or her hard work at home with you. Consider rewarding him/her with a special treat after a session or a bigger reward after a week of homework. Give your child lots of praise and love for his/her hard work at home and at school. Make sure to tell your child that you understand he or she has to work hard to succeed.
