Instructions

    • 1

Make sure you don't have a honey allergy. Honey can be hazardous to anybody who is allergic to it.

    • 2

Use dark honeys. According to an ABC News report, honey acts as a decongestant and cough suppressant. (See References.) The darker honeys, such as buckwheat honey, contain more antioxidants. While some benefit can be derived no matter which honey you use, the darker honeys are better as healing substances.

    • 3

Use just a teaspoonful. Take as needed, as you would any other type of cough medicine.

    • 4

Mix it with hot tea. Tea has also been used as a natural remedy, and a number of teas on the market are designed for throat comfort. Mixing any one of those teas with a spoonful of dark honey is ideal for decongestion.

    • 5

Steam it. Boil a small pot of water. While it boils, add a tablespoon of honey to it. Place your head over the steam, far enough away not to get burned, but close enough to take advantage of the steaming honey-water. Place a small towel over your head and breathe deeply through the nose.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful not to take too much honey before bedtime, as the sugar can lead to excess energy.
