How to Troubleshoot Windows XP Audio

Check the volume control located on the front or side of your computer to be sure that it is not set at the lowest level. If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Step 2.

Right-click on the "Volume Control" icon located on the Start menu taskbar and then select "Open Volume Control."

Remove all checkmarks beside "Mute" in the Master Volume and all other visible categories. If the sound problem is not solved, proceed to Step 4.

Right-click on the "Volume Control" icon and select "Adjust Audio Properties."

Go to the Volume tab and adjust the "Device Volume" by moving the slider within the range from Low to High.

Click on "Speaker Volume" under Speaker Settings and move the slider within the range from Low to High to reset the left and right speaker volume. If the sound problem is not solved, proceed to Step 7.

Go to the Hardware tab and highlight the device with the sound issue and then click "Troubleshoot." Follow the prompts until the issue is resolved.
