Today, they are used by car GPS systems to determine the location, direction and speed of the vehicles and to give directions to drivers. Compare whether the system is installed into the car or whether it is portable and can be moved from car to car. Installed systems usually have larger screens and may have additional features like weather updates but cannot be taken with you if you travel in another vehicle like a portable system can.

Some will now use text-to-speech to say road names in the directions like "In 0.4 miles turn right on to Washington Street." Compare display size and appearance. Many installed systems will have 5 to 7 inch displays which are much larger than the 2 to 3 inch displays of portable GPS units. In addition to size, view the GPS screen both during daylight and in the dark to make sure it is visible in any light.

Compare traffic and weather updates. Some GPS units include this for free for a certain period of time while others offer subscriptions. In addition to traffic, some GPS units will show upcoming movie times or local gas prices.

Compare the maps that are offered and the potential for updates. If you travel overseas often, make sure you chose a GPS unit that has the ability to download foreign maps. If you like in a developing area, look for a GPS unit that includes a free map update.
