Whether you are at the farmers market, a roadside stand or in the grocery store buying fresh herbs is easy. There are simple ways to tell if the herbs are fresh.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

When looking over available herbs reach for bunches that have leaves that are intense color, are full, and do not show any wilting or browning.

  2. Step 2

Next, pick up the herbs and feel their weight. The bunch will have a nice weight in your hand and not be soaked in water to look fresh. Also the stems will support themselves, individual stems it won't limp over. Not even for fresh dill which is very feathery and light.

  3. Step 3

When you feel that you have a seemingly fresh bunch, smell it. This is a very important step but often over looked. If you are buying mint it should smell like mint. Rub a leaf between your fingers, the oils of the plant should deposit sent on your hand. Fresh herbs will leave a great smell, but the old bunches will leave a very weak scent.

  4. Step 4

Now that you have tested for freshness, bring home the bunch that stands out from the rest. Remember, use your herbs right away. They will only last a day or two at their peak freshness in your fridge.
