Cajun Candied Sweet Potatoes
Cajun Candied Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes or yams are one of the great Cajun food staples. There are two dishes that are best known--sweet potato pie and candied yams. This recipe is for Cajun candied yams, and they are so easy to make!

There are some other Cajun recipes listed in the Resources below, so if you like this one, you might try Pear Pie or Shrimp Pasta Salad, or even a Cajun main dish.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • sweet potatoes or yams
  • brown sugar
  • butter or margarine
  • cinnamon
  • mini marshmallows
  1. Step 1

Set the oven to 350 degrees and prepare a baking dish by greasing it up the sides with a little oil or butter on a piece of paper towel.

  2. Step 2

Place two small cans or a large can of Trappey's or Sugary Sam yams in a casserole dish that is oven safe. Sprinkle the yams with cinnamon. Add about 1/2 cup of dark brown sugar and about three tablespoons of butter or margarine on the top.

  3. Step 3

Place this dish in the oven at 350 degrees for about an hour and a half or until the liquid is getting sticky and gooey.

  4. Step 4

Add a cup of mini marshmallows and return to the oven for about 15 minutes or until the marshmallows are starting to brown. Remove from the oven and serve immediately.

Tips & Warnings
  • These are so easy to cook and so sweet, but cleanup is a little messy. We usually remove any left-overs and place them in a smaller bowl and wash the dish at the first opportunity. It is easier to clean while the yams are still warm.
