Having to give your cat a pill can prove to be a challenging task, but if done correctly can be much easier and more efficient than hiding a pill in food (which may or may not get eaten) or attempting to give liquids.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A pill cutter or knife
  • cat treats
  • cat brush
  • feline medication
  1. Step 1

Be patient and soothing. Let your cat know that this is a time in which it'll have to do something you want, but it will get lots of loving in the process. Have a treat or a brush handy to reward the cat.

  2. Step 2

Get on your knees and give kitty some love, before positioning him or her directly in front of you, back toward you.

  3. Step 3

Gently, but firmly hold the cat's neck and chin up (with your one hand) so that it's looking either at you or the ceiling. Use that same hand to then part its mouth using your index finger and thumb and hold the mouth open that way. Lean forward if it helps you to hold the cat down a bit.

  4. Step 4

With your other hand pop the pill (half or whole, depending on the dosage and appropriate size) into the back of its throat, as far back on the tongue as possible. Continue keeping it's mouth open and head up as high and outstretched as possible with that other hand. Usually the cat will then swallow with the mouth open.

  5. Step 5

Now, let the cat go and watch for a moment to be sure that the cat did, in fact, swallow the pill. Be sure to give lots of loving and then use the treat or brush as a reward. Because your cat will usually have to finish it's course of treatment, make sure that the experience is as positive as you can make it. In doing this, not only will it be easier for the cat, but it'll be easier for you! Good luck!

Tips & Warnings
  • Never attempt to give the medicine if you're in a hurry or are frustrated. Plan a time that works best for you, as the cat will sense your irritation and run away each time you have to administer.
  • As an alternative you may give liquid medications similarly. In this case I would suggest using heavy gloves in case of cat scratches, and instead of holding the cat's mouth wide open, only hold it partially open and administer the liquid slowly into the side of the mouth.
  • Only give pets veterinary prescribed medication or supplements. Never give pets human medications unless a vet specifically recommends it.
