Step 1
First you will need to place the ladder in a position that will allow you to get on the roof where the chimney is located. Next you will need to place the bricks into your burlap sack. Then you will place a slip not around the top of the burlap sack with the rope. Try dropping the burlap sack to insure that the rope does not come untied.
-
Step 2
You will then drop the sack full of bricks down into the chimney working loose all of the soot. You will need to repeat this process several times. Then you will need to go to the main furnace where the chimney is hooked up and see if there is a door to open. If there is you will open the door and suck out the soot with your shop vac.
-
Step 3
If there is not a door you will need to remove the pipe going to the furnace and suck out the debris with the shop vac. Remember you may have to repeat this process several times to remove all of the soot that has accumulated over the years. Remember when finished to close the door or reattach the pipe that you removed.

Step 4
Now that the chimney is clean inspect with your trouble light checking for loose bricks or cracks. If you find damage contact a professional chimney sweeper that specializes in finding damage and are able to make the repairs needed.
