How to Write a Winning Speech

Writing a good speech is a matter of organized thinking and following the right steps. Plug it in and you'll write a speech that will have the audience in the palm of your hands.

Things You'll Need:

• Resource materials
• Index cards
• Pen
• A sense of humor!

1. Get your resources, if needed, and be prepared to do your outline on your lined index cards!

2. Mark the title of your first index card "Introduction." Line #1 will be your name and background, unless someone has already introduced you with the appropriate and applicable information. If that's the case, make #1 your "humorous" intro. Learn the story by heart to make it more personal, but you can write it down on the index card for practice.
   #2 will be the title and purpose of your speech. Make it concise and tell them WHY this is important for them to know by appealing to your similarities as people. Think big picture.

3. The next index card will be "Content." Number 1 will explain points 1 2 and 3 or your speech. These should be the steps or paraphrased topic sentences of each of your points. It's generally best not to exceed 3 points, unless you are addressing a technical/scientific forum that is familiar with this type of speaking.

4. The next 3 index cards will expand on each of your topic sentences. Don't go overboard on explanations to laymen. If there is time and interest, details can be addressed with Q and A. Try to use examples that compare each of your points with an everyday event, so you can keep your audience on track. I.E. "Osmosis is the is the bullet train of science. It's sleek and stealthy and moves things where needed."

5. Your last index card will be marked "conclusion." Here you will paraphrase your points and explain their significance. You may chose to end with another personal anecdote to illustrate why you find this important. End with your appreciation for their time and your availability to answer questions. Also, let them know if you have materials or business cards they can take, so they can contact you in the future. You have done it!!!

Tips & Warnings

• Be yourself and reachable so the audience feels like they are chatting with a friend.
• Make the topic "sexy" by applying it to the interests of your audience.
• Don't drone. Animate your speech and use varying levels of tone. Otherwise, your audience will be lulled to sleep!
• Make eye contact and try to speak to a few people directly.
• Come out from behind the podium.
• Use hand gestures.
