When someone writes you a check, in order to either deposit that check into your savings or checking account, or to cash that check, you need to sign, or endorse, the check on the back. Depending on what you wish to do, there are a few steps that need to be taken to properly endorse that check.

This article takes you through the process of endorsing a check, for either getting cash back or depositing it in your account.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what you want to do with the check. If you're going to present it at the bank and ask for cash, don't endorse it until you're at the teller window. Endorsing a check means it can be cashed, and if that check is lost before you get to the bank, it is possible for someone else to cash it.

  2. Step 2

When you're ready to cash the check at the bank, turn it over. The left hand top side will have a place for you to sign your name. Do not write anywhere other than that portion of the check.

Sign your name exactly as it appears on the front of the check. Do not sign your nickname, or a different version of your name.

  3. Step 3

If you're going to deposit that check into a savings or checking account you have with that bank, turn the check over and sign your name in the same place, and then below that write "For Deposit Only" and below that, write your account number. Complete a deposit ticket, if necessary to complete the transaction.

Tips & Warnings
  • For checks written to a minor, the check needs to be signed by the minor, plus endorsed by the parent or guardian. The minor signs first, and then the adult signs, and indicates either "Parent" or "Guardian" of "Child's Name" after their signature.
