How to Play Online Games (Second Life) and Make Money

Second Life is an online game that seeks to mimic the real world, providing users with a "second life" to go through. What separates Second Life from most online games is the fact that you can trade in your "Linden Dollars" -- Second Life's currency -- for real life dollars. While most users won't make much more than pocket change, a 2006 "Wired" magazine article noted that one Second Life's land owner, with the avatar name Anshe Chung, was rumored to make over $150,000 a year.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a job in Second Life. Any business that you see in Second Life inevitably requires employees -- from the bouncers and waitresses at a night club, to the clerks in a shop, to various other white collar employees. While you can make real money doing this, it takes a long time even if you have a job that pays well in Linden Dollars.

    • 2

Design a digital product that other people can purchase. These products can include furniture for a character's home, pieces of art and even avatars. Once you've created a bunch of products, you can rent out space in a store and sell the pieces you've created. The more original and interesting the piece, the more you'll be able to sell it for.

    • 3

Purchase and develop land, then rent out the virtual homes. This is by far the most expensive way to make money on Second Life, but it is also the most profitable. Once you've purchased the land from Linden Labs, you can create homes on it and rent them out to other Second Life users.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take it slow, particularly if you're developing land. Just like in real life, you don't want to overextend yourself.
