Traveling in a recreational vehicle (RV) is convenient, but there is not always an electrical hookup available. Using a generator is an option, but they burn gas and that can get expensive. If the primary reason for needing electricity is to preserve food in the refrigerator, then you don't need it. Keep your foods cold by using dry ice in an RV fridge. This method is also great for those times when the fridge has a mechanical failure.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up 10 lbs. of the dry ice with tongs and place it on four or five sheets of newspaper. Never touch it with your bare hands, as it will damage skin.

    • 2

Wrap the newspaper around the dry ice with gloved hands. There is no need to tape it shut, tuck the ends under the bottom of the dry ice.

    • 3

Place the wrapped dry ice in the RV refrigerator on the bottom shelf.

    • 4

      Close the RV fridge.

    • 5

Replace the block of dry ice when the one in the fridge evaporates, after approximately 12 to 24 hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep extra dry ice in an ice chest but do not seal the ice chest completely, provide a vent for the gas that the dry ice gives off. The sublimation, or evaporation, of the dry ice will carbonate the contents of any open containers in the fridge. This is not harmful.

  • Never touch dry ice with bare skin; use tongs or gloves. Do not place the dry ice directly on a fridge shelf without some form of insulation, such as paper or cardboard. Do not leave dry ice unattended around children or pets.
