How to Buy GPS Tracking Devices

With GPS-tracking devices becoming more common on the marketplace today, using the excuse "I was lost" may become obsolete. GPS, or Global Positioning System, is guided by satellites to constantly track anyone or anything equipped with the device. These devices are mostly found in automobiles and new cell phones.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to your electronics store (such as Best Buy or Radio Shack) or cell phone provider (AT&T, Verizon, etc.). The electronics store will carry several varieties of GPS car units, while the cell phone provider will have phones equipped with a GPS.

    • 2

Talk to the customer service representative. If shopping for a car, the sales staff can tell you which features each have and if it can be voice activated. When in the cell phone provider's store, the attendant will be able to tell you which phones are equipped with GPS and if you have to pay extra for the feature.

    • 3

Settle on a product. Normally, products with a GPS are slightly more expensive (especially cell phones).

    • 4

Purchase the product from the front desk. With the car units, you will not pay a monthly fee for the service. However, this is not always the case with cell phones. You may need to pay an extra fee per month to use the GPS (or it may be included with a special Internet package).

Tips & Warnings

  • If you already know what you want, consider purchasing GPS units online. For car units, go to Best Buy or Radio Shack (links provided in "Resources"). For cell phones, just go to the link of your service carrier. Also included in the links below is another GPS-tracking unit device website that has odds and ends for GPS units.
