How to File a Change of Address With the IRS

If you are moving, you will need to file your address change with the Internal Revenue Service. You should not rely on the Postal Service's mail-forwarding service for correspondence with the IRS.

Instructions

1. Obtain IRS Form 8822 by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (829-3676) and requesting that a copy be mailed to you. The form also can be obtained at the IRS website. Type "8822" in the search box.

2. Fill out the form carefully with a blue or black ink pen. The IRS may reject the form if everything is not properly filled out. Review the information to verify that it is correct.

3. Mail the form to Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center. The city and state mailing information depends on your location. The form will list the corresponding addresses for each area. Once the IRS receives completed form, your change of address should be processed in four to six weeks.
