The sound of the trumpet can be heard in many styles of music including classical, rock, blues and jazz. It is a popular instrument choice for young musicians because they believe its three buttons make it is easier to play than other instruments. In reality, the trumpet is as complex as any instrument. The good news is that with practice, good learning materials and effective instruction you can learn to play the trumpet in no time.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use instructional books and DVDs to learn how to play the trumpet. Check online, in music stores and in used bookstores for good prices on these items. Books can be very helpful, but if you are a visual learner you may want to buy a DVD as well. Some books come with both DVDs and CDs such as Hal Leonard's "Play Trumpet Today! Beginner's Pack." Another recommended video resource is Fred Sautter's "Sound the Trumpet." This video provides a comprehensive overview of trumpet technique. (See Resources)

  2. Step 2

Seek the help of an experienced trumpet instructor. Instructors can typically be found through your local music store.

  3. Step 3

Look for a trumpet or brass club in your area and go to a meeting. Instrument clubs are a wonderful place to learn new songs and get playing tips from others more experienced than yourself.
