Viruses are dangerous parasites that infect certain files. Usually, these bugs download from unknown websites attached to programs. However, specific websites send you viruses just by clicking on their link. Once a virus takes control of your system, it can be difficult to remove. When the file opens, it attaches to other applications including Windows system files. You can remove viruses, malware and spyware with free tools. Rising Antivirus and Avira AntiVir Personal (see Resources) along with other free applications can clean up viruses within an hour.

Instructions

  1. Rising Antivirus

    • 1

Double-click on the application, "Freerav.exe." Wait a few seconds. Press "English" and then "OK." Go through the installation process, which includes agreeing to the terms as well as choosing a destination folder. Rising will proceed to complete a quick scan before installing the program.

    • 2

Restart Windows by pressing "Finish" at the end of the installation. After the reboot, Rising begins by running a security scan. Then decide to setup a daily automatic scan or manual.

    • 3

Click on the "Start Menu" and then the "Programs" tab. Select the Rising file folder and press the "Rising Antivirus" tab.

    • 4

Select the "Update" button. Update the Rising Antivirus application at least once a week. The process will complete within five minutes. A computer reboot is essential.

    • 5

Right click on the "Umbrella" icon in the Windows toolbar. Select, "Run Rising Antivirus." Press the "Scan" button. Click all of the hard drives on your PC on the left side. Press the "Start" play button.

    • 6

Let the scan completely finish. This will take approximately an hour, depending on the amount of drives. If you have a virus, you can "Clean" "Delete" or "Ignore." Cleaning the file will attempt to remove the virus. Deleting the file will remove it from the computer and usually the best option. "Ignore" allows you to move on and keep the file. Use this option if you feel the program made a mistake.

    Avira AntiVir Personal

    • 7

Double-click "Avira_AntiVir_Personal_en.exe." Click "Next" to begin the setup. Select "Next." Click the "I Agree" box and then press "Next." Select "Accept Private Use" box and press "Next" twice. Enter your information for a free-use license. Select "Next" twice again.

    • 8

Configure Avira. Keep "Detection" at "Medium" levels. Press, "Next." Select "All" threats and click "Next" three times. Select "Finish."

    • 9

Double-click on the red umbrella in your quick launch bar. Press the "Scan System Now" link. The scan takes roughly an hour. The status window will display "Time Elapsed" and "Threats Detected."

    • 10

Choose to "Repair," "Quarantine" or "Delete" on the virus. At the end of the scan, a report of detected viruses will appear. Try to "Repair" the file, an attempt to remove the virus from the file. "Deleting" the application will delete the virus information. If the virus is not repairable or removable, "Quarantine" is the last result. This moves the file to a safe location away from any other applications.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only have one antivirus program installed at the same time. Two or more can conflict with each other and cause crashes.
