Clean an Old Computer

For many people, the quick progression of computer technology means that they are replacing their personal computers often. The old computers can be given to friends, family, or donated to charitable organizations. Before doing so it is important to clear the computer of any personal information. Doing this manually may cause some of the information to be recoverable, but using some disk-cleaning software will ensure that your computer is completely cleaned and your privacy is safe.

Things You'll Need

  • A computer connected to the internet
  • Flash memory card

Instructions

    • 1

Transfer any files that you wish to save onto your new computer. You can do this by purchasing a "flash memory card" from your local computer parts store, placing it in your computer's USB port, and dragging any files you want to keep into the flash memory card in your "My Computer" folder.

    • 2

Download some type of disk-cleaning software. Commercial disk-cleaning software is a popular choice; however there are many free choices (such as Active@ Kill Hard Drive Eraser and Darik's Boot and Nuke) that will do the job very well.

    • 3

Install the disk-cleaning software and run it.

    • 4

Follow the directions given by the program to clean out the old computer. To do this double click the program icon to get it started. Then it will ask you if you are sure you want to overwrite all files and data sectors. After selecting "yes" or "next," most will ask you to close all other programs. Once this is done there will be an option to begin overwrite, select this and the program will proceed to clean your computer.

    • 5

Click "finish" or "close" once the program has finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many of these programs will not delete transferable software. If you would like to clean out any transferable programs go to your Start Menu, then Control Panel, then double click on the "Add or Remove Programs" icon and remove the programs manually.

  • Trying to clean out a computer without using a disk-cleaning program can leave behind sensitive personal information.
