A prepaid cell phone allows you to have a phone while still giving you freedom from a contract. When choosing a prepaid cell phone provider, there are several considerations to keep in mind. Different cell phone companies will pitch different deals to persuade you to go with their service, but do your homework first. Find out what to look for in a provider, from the selection of phones to the extra fees.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check the selection of phones from the provider. If it does not offer a prepaid phone with the features you want, move on to the next company.

  2. Step 2

Check the cell phone company's coverage area. The company's website or a store brochure should show a map of the areas it covers. Find out how well the company covers your area. Ask friends and family if they have any of the providers you are considering, and what they think of the coverage.

  3. Step 3

Ask what activation fees, if any, are charged for activating your phone. If two companies seem equal in service, but one has a lower activation fee, choose the company with the lower fee.

  4. Step 4

Compare the phone packages side by side. Does the package you need, including the minutes and text messages you require, have the same price for each company? One company may offer a better deal on the same service compared to another.

  5. Step 5

Ask if long-distance or roaming charges apply. Some companies never charge for any long-distance or roaming calls. If they do charge, however, one call can add $20 or more to your bill.

  6. Step 6

Check for fees on extra phone features, such as picture messaging. See what they cost and which provider offers the cheapest deal.

  7. Step 7

Ask if the company charges on days the phone is not used. A company may charge a daily fee, but have cheaper minutes. Other companies charge more for minutes, but do not include a daily fee. Estimate how much time you'll spend on the phone, and which option would be the cheapest for you.
