Things You'll Need:
- Wood stain
- Foam brush
- Dry rags
- Newspapers
-
Step 1
Wash the chairs thoroughly and sand out any rough spots. Make sure you work in a well ventilated area or outdoors. Spread several layers of newspaper over the floor so as not to stain it.
-
Step 2
Use a cheap foam brush from the craft store to apply the stain. It is inexpensive; it will last long enough for the job and just toss it in the trash when the stain job is finished. Open the can of stain and stir it well. Dip the foam brush into the stain and apply it to the chair. Brush in the direction of the wood grain.
-
Step 3
Staining a wooden chairLet the stain set for at least 5 – 10 minutes and then take a soft rag, wiping off the excess stain. By letting the stain stay on for those few minutes, it settles in the grooves making the stain darker in some areas.
-
Step 4
Apply a second coat of stain if the chair is not dark enough after the first coat. Let the first coat dry thoroughly before giving it a second coat. Again, wipe off the excess after a few minutes. Two coats are usually enough but you can stain it with as many coats as desired.

Step 5
