Things You'll Need:
- Deadbolt lock with drilling template
- Electric drill
- Drill bit for deadbolt diameter
- Drill bit for deadbolt latch hole
- Utility knife
- Chisel
- Screwdriver
-
Step 1
Look in the box the deadbolt came in to find a drilling template. This template will show you where to drill. Attach the template to the door in the location you desire per the template's directions.
-
Step 2
Nail a tiny bit into the center of the template where the deadbolt will go and remove the nail on both sides of the door. This will create a groove for your drill to drill the hole for the deadbolt.
-
Step 3
Drill a hole for the deadbolt according to the size directions that came with the deadbolt. Your drill bit should align with the groove created in step 2. Drill 3/4 the way through one side and then drill the complete hole starting on the reverse side.
-
Step 4
Drill the latch hole per the drilling template. Make sure to stay horizontal to the door so the latch can move freely.
-
Step 5
Install the latch and strike plate. The strike plate will need to be recessed in the door, so create an outline of the strike plate using a utility knife.
-
Step 6
Remove the latch and strike plate. Using a chisel, chisel out the area for the strike plate so it will lay flush with the door.
-
Step 7
Install the door hardware per the instructions provided with the deadbolt.
-
Step 8
Close the door and mark on the door jamb where the strike plate will align with the door frame.
-
Step 9
Drill out the hole for the latch and install the strike plate.
