Keeping a well-stocked research bag helps make genealogical trips more profitable. It saves time and makes the process more enjoyable. A good research bag requires a few basic items to record and organize your findings but doesn't forget the human element of comfort. Here is what I have packed so that I can go in a split second-

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a sturdy bag. Consider a messenger bag for laptops or a small rolling carry-on. The bag should have plenty of pockets to protect and organize the packed items.

  2. Step 2

    Pack the basic research items:

A laptop, flash drive, CD or other method of transporting and acquiring digital files. Include office supplies like a small notebook, a calculator, pencils, pencil sharpener, post-its, paperclips, etc. Remember to pack an expandable file folder to file maps, pamphlets and brochures.

  3. Step 3

    Pack helpful items:

Include a magnifying glass- I keep two; one lighted. This helps decipher hard-to-read transcripts and microfilms.

Pack a digital camera and extra batteries for taking pictures of text and photographs. [If you have a new one, put your old camera in the bag.]

A change purse with change for parking meters and copiers. Include some printer paper.

Keep a notebook with association membership information, password hints and numbers for log-ins.

  4. Step 4

    Pack personal items:

Tissues, lip balm, hand lotion, medications, band-aids, sunscreen, etc. will keep you comfortable and allow you to take as much time as needed.

  5. Step 5

Keep the bag packed and stored away in the same spot for quick get-a-ways. Happy Researching!

Tips & Warnings
  • Adjust the items for your own style and needs.
