Blue bubbles.
Wet with just a glance from his eyes.
Cracked in the blueblack cold.
She smelled like December.

...Did that take you somewhere?

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Notebook
  • Pencil/Pen
  • Imagination
  • Thesaurus
  • Internet Access
  1. Step 1
    ...Hmmmm...

    ...Hmmmm...

-Pick a theme that you want to write about ... but it helps if it's:
    *Something you're personally passionate about
    *Something you've personally experienced
*Something you don't hear about every day

  2. Step 2
    !Write til' ya fingers cramp!

-Do a stream of consciousness explosion on the theme...and write down every word that you can think of that goes with your theme.
Use your thesaurus to help you with this or go to www.thesaurus.com

  3. Step 3
    ..Use all....

    ..Use all....

-Organize your words into ideas by viewing them from every sense that you have, and every perspective you can think of:
*What does it look like? Lighting? Shadows? Above it, below it?
*What does it sound like? How close or how far?
*What does it smell like? Odors weak or strong?
*What does it taste like? What is the texture on your tongue?
*What does it feel like? How does your skin react?

  4. Step 4
    OMG I was right there!!

    OMG I was right there!!

-Put the listener in the same space as your ideas.
After you've organized them by sense or perspective, make the listener feel exactly what it feels like to you :) and draw them into the experience as if they were watching it happen right in front of them in real time...
The more abstract the language, the harder they have to work to relate. The more concrete the image, the more engaged the listener becomes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cement the person-perspective..."I," "we," "she," "they"
  • Make sure you tell a story...people love a beginning, a middle, and an end
  • It's always refreshing to read lyrics with a twist...like at the end of the verse you find out it's the dog singing. Hah! :)
  • Stop judging yourself! You cut off the flow of your creativity if you judge while you write...you have to release your muse like water from a spigot
  • Please, please, please avoid cliches...they're already overused or we wouldn't call them cliches...no one will pay attention to your writing if you use them
  • Don't worry about rhyming or rhyme scheme until your ideas are finalized
