Standard Ruler

Have you ever had a need to measure something, but couldn't remember how to read your ruler? Don't go out and purchase something fancy, this helpful article will remind you how to read the ruler you already have.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin by setting your ruler down flat; it's much more difficult to read a ruler on an angle.

    • 2

Next, you need to place the edge of the ruler. Place the back end (the one with the lowest numbers) even with the edge of whatever it is you wish to measure.

    • 3

Now you need to identify which units of measurement your ruler is using. Most rulers will use inches or centimeters, but some use odd units of measurement. The unit of measurement should be located on the edge of the ruler. (If you can't find it, check online)

    • 4

Your next job will be to determine the length of the object you wish to measure. Measure up to the largest mark (the closest bold number), this will give you a good first estimate.

    • 5

To get a closer estimate on your ruler, measure up to the next largest mark you can. The inch is probably divided into 10, or a similar fraction.

    • 6

After you have reached the largest mark you can, start counting the smaller marks. They should be divided into an easy fraction-1/4, ½ etc. Count how many marks there are, add the original number, and you will have successfully measured your object!
