Things You'll Need:
- A garbage bin
- Fruits and vegetables scraps
- Dried stuff, grass, shredded paper.
- Dirt, clear from glass.
-
Step 1
Place your garbage can in a place outside your house, a places in the shade may work best but since you may not want a slight smell or bugs to close to you don't place your garbage can outside a window or door.. not too close anyways.
-
Step 2
Add a bit of dirt to your garbage can, this is simply to help the process... not to much but make sure there s about 2-3 inches across the entire bottom of the can.
-
Step 3
Place some dry materials in the bottom of the garbage can... about 2 inches all around the bottom of the can. Remember dry materials must break down, paper, dry grass or leaves all work great!
-
Step 4
Now you may add your fruit and vegetable clippings, trimmings, or gone bad produce. Some may but it up first, making the produce smaller can help it break down faster... some may even blend their produce in a Vita-Mix or other such blender.
-
Step 5
Every other day cover the newly added produce with more dry materials, more grass, paper shreddings, or leaves. Doing this will keep the compost from smelling nearly as much.
-
Step 6
Some people will take a stick or garden tool and stir/flip the compost over.. allowing it to break down faster. Rinse tools after doing so.
-
Step 7
Keep compost out of sun to prevent a lot of smelling, wash hands after handling.
