Glassware like crystal and cut glass items can become dull and damaged if not cleaned and cared for properly. Here are some steps you can take to care for crystal and other fine glassware.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plastic bowls
  • Dish soap
  • Dish towel
  • Lemon peel
  • Baking soda
  1. Step 1

Never wash crystal or fine glassware in the dishwasher - dish washing detergents are too strong for these items and will cause clouding or etching of the surfaces.

  2. Step 2

To wash by hand first fill a large plastic bowl with warm warm water and dish soap. Only wash one item at a time to prevent chipping and breaking.

  3. Step 3

Rinse the crystal in another plastic bowl filled with warm water and the peel from a lemon. The lemon peels will cut away any greasy residue and the citric acid will add shine to the surface.

  4. Step 4

Next, dry the crystal glassware with a soft dish towel. While drying, hold the towel still and, while holding the base or stem firmly, twist the crystal against the cloth. Moving the towel around during drying can easily break the stem.

  5. Step 5

If your crystal needs polishing, use a mixture of baking soda and water to create a thin paste. Rub the surface with the paste and a soft cloth. Rinse and dry as above.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't use your crystal often, be sure to occasionally wipe the outsides with a soapy cloth, then wipe clear with a damp one.
  • High temperature water can crack and break crystal and glassware. Wash in warm water only.
  • Dishwashers can damage glassware due to harsh detergents and and high temperatures.
