Playing Scrabble Online Alone is Easy

Alfred Mosher Butts, an unemployed architect, invented Scrabble in the late 1940s, and it was rejected by every game company. Not until he joined up with James Brunot and refined the rules did Scrabble become a trademarked game that is one of the most popular and longest-lasting word games around. If you want to play but can't find people to play against, you can play Scrabble alone online by using a free service.

Use the link at the bottom of this article to go to Pogo.com, and click on the left button to sign up for a free membership.

Fill out the required information: a screen name, password, email address and age. Read and accept the terms and conditions for the website. Click on "submit" when you are done.

On the next screen, from the left side menu bar, select "word games." A new menu of choices will appear in the center of the screen and select "Scrabble" by clicking on it with your mouse.

Choose how many players you want in the game. There will be you and up to three other players. These players are computer robots, not real people. Click on the tab for two, three or four players to set your selection.

Select your skill level from the choices listed beneath the player tabs in the window by clicking on the word. Select if you want the skill of the game to be social, beginner, intermediate, advanced, master or expert. Just remember (and a reminder will come up on the screen in blue), the skill level you select will also determine the skill level of the computer robot you will play against.

Click on the "play against robots" link above the player tabs and to the right of the Scrabble logo. The system will launch a new window that will contain your game. A brief explanation of how to work the buttons in the window is included in the beginning. The instructions will vary slightly depending on whether you have a Macintosh or personal computer.

Tips

To play a more complicated game, in addition to changing the skill level, increase the number of players. This will change the ratio of letter tiles to players.
