Get all the daily chances. Even though this usually may not get you much gold, sometimes it gives out rare items. You can always be lucky.

Get your aquariuam happy. It doesn't cost much, just buy the fishes that cost under 5k, but try to have a variety. It is also good to have some decorations. Change the song that is playing and feed the fishes everyday or so. This would keep the aquarium overseer happy and give you great rewards ( I have gotten almost 20k from it once!).

Buy low and sell high. Just like on the real market, you should always buy low and sell high. First save up enough money to play the market (usually 10-20k is enough to start) and then study the graphs of the popular items. Time your buy time right and you could earn a hefty amount of $$.

Post in the forums. This won't get you much gold, but it is still a time filler while your waiting for that item to sell. You could also learn what items you will want to buy here and other useful info.
