Running a sorority or fraternity is a very challenging, though ultimately rewarding experience for members of Greek life. And while sororities and fraternities have obvious differences, they both can benefit from a few general guidelines about operation. In short, the most effective way to run either is to handle business first, and to also reward yourselves as well.

Instructions

    • 1

RECRUIT, because new member intake is what keeps fraternities and sororities alive and growing. The best way to attract interests is to be a social organization. Throw parties, attend campus events, and just be outgoing. If you seem to be a cool tight group, people will naturally be drawn to you.

FUNDRAISE often, as much as you can. Raising money is one of the biggest challenges facing social organizations. The best way to do so is to pool resources. If your org has a lot of members, look for odd jobs that require a large headcount and go to work. Throw parties and charge at the door. Or, open up a chapter bank account that accrues interest.

    • 3

DO COMMUNITY SERVICE. This not only gives back to those less fortunate, it's a good way to show your fraternity or sorority in a positive light, and to attract productive interests instead of party animals. Since nearly every organization has a national philanthropy, gear your service projects towards the causes. But don't limit yourselves either.

PARTY, and party hard! Contrary to what some school administrators might say, partying is an essential facet of Greek like. It's a way to relive stress and to reward your chapter for doing all the hard work of running an organization. It's also a way to stay relevant among your peers, which can help tremendously with recruitment.

Tips & Warnings

  • Organization is the key to a successful fraternity or sorority. Have productive meetings, delegate tasks among members to keep the workload bearable, and take care of all paperwork professionally.

  • Having a strong emphasis on campus involvement will also help with promoting your organization. It will also win you points with school administration, and that is always a good thing.

  • Communication is key to getting things done smoothly. Don't forget!
