Learn to make ramen noodles at a workshop in Japan.

You've probably made instant ramen noodles before, but through a workshop offered in Japan, you can make the treat from scratch. The Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum in Osaka, Japan, offers a "chicken ramen workshop," which lets guests create their own bags of ramen, starting with flour and water. The attraction is a must for lovers of instant noodles.

Instructions

Reserve a spot at a workshop session well in advance. Sessions tend to fill up quickly with students on class trips. Classes are offered three to four times a day, Wednesday through Sunday. The reservation number is (from the United States) 011-81-66-072-751-0825. Note that the phone representative will likely not speak any English.

Be prepared to take direction in Japanese. The workshop is very detail-oriented, and the museum insists that all participants understand Japanese. This means that if you don't know the language, you'll have to hire a translator to attend the workshop with you. The city of Osaka has a (unrelated) free tour-guide service that can provide you with a friendly volunteer guide (if you book well in advance and offer to pay for the person's entrance fee). See Resources.

Travel to the town of Ikeda in Osaka to attend the workshop. You'll get to do everything from designing the plastic bag to kneading the dough to churning out the noodles. (The only thing you won't get to do is deep-fry the noodles to preserve them; this is done for you.) In the end, a workshop attendant will vacuum-seal the ramen in your personally designed bag for you to take home as a souvenir.

Tips & Warnings

  • After the workshop, walk through the museum and learn the history of instant ramen, invented by Momofuku Ando half a century ago.
