Buying and selling domain names can be very lucrative. While the price of registering or purchasing a domain name is typically less than $10, domain names are sold every day for much more than that. Although selecting a domain name that can be sold for thousands of dollars understandably can be a bit tricky, you'll find the actual process of buying a domain name and selling it incredibly straightforward and easy. By following a few simple steps, you could be well on your way to buying and selling your own domain name in no time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide which registrar you would like to use to purchase your domain name. Namecheap and GoDaddy are two popular choices among many. Read reviews and compare prices for these and other registrars before making your decision. Also, it might be a good idea to see if that registrar has its own venue for selling the domain names as well, as doing both the buying and selling of the domain in the same place may simplify the process.

  2. Step 2

Purchase the domain name. The specifics of this will depend on which site you use. You will usually encounter an easy process that includes checking the availability of the name, adding the name to your cart and entering your personal and billing information and making payment.

  3. Step 3

Decide where you would like to sell your domain. Some popular choices include listing the domain for same at the registrar itself, putting the domain up for sale on a site specifically made for selling domains (such as Afternic, Namepros or Sedo) or even listing the domain for sale on eBay. In addition, if you can think of an individual or business that may like your domain, it doesn't hurt to ask them directly if they would be interested in purchasing it from you.

  4. Step 4

Sell the domain. Make sure you have the money up front before transferring the domain.

  5. Step 5

Transfer the domain. It is always best to use the option of "pushing" the domain to another user of the registrar instead of transferring the domain to another registrar. Creating an account with a registrar is free and easy to do, so most buyers will not have a problem creating an account so you can simply push the domain to them. However, if you must transfer the domain to another registrar, follow the instructions listed on your registrar's website, as each registrar has its own unique rules about the process.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many people mistakenly believe that formal registration of a domain is needed after purchase. However, the act of purchasing the domain itself will automatically register the domain for you.
  • When selling your domains, be aware of scams. Insist on up-front payments or using an online escrow service like Escrow.com.
