Many of the container plants that grow well in pots in the house or in hanging baskets on the porch will grow in the ground.

We live in Zone 8 and we have variegated spider plants and the green spider plants growing in the yard. We also grow wandering jew, asparagus fern and maidenhair fern in the ground.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • hanging baskets or container garden plants
  • flower beds
  1. Step 1

Remove the plant from the container and cut it apart into about four parts, or if the roots can be pulled apart, just pull it into four sections.

  2. Step 2

Replant one part back into the container, and use the other three sections to plant into the ground.

  3. Step 3

Plant the three sections into different areas of the flower bed and water for a few days to get the roots acclimated to the new surroundings.

  4. Step 4

Be prepared. Several of these plants will die with the first frost. In January or February, cut the tops off. These plants will come back out in the spring, and are beautiful all summer. The spider plants spread the same way planted in the soil as they do in a hanging basket.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try different plants and see if they survive the winter. You may be surprised what will grow outside in your flower beds.
