How to Troubleshoot a Maxtor External Hard Drive

External hard drives are a tool used to archive large folders, applications, and files. These devices can be difficult to troubleshoot--but, because most users save valuable information on an external hard drive, troubleshooting the device is important, as it can save the headache (and money) of having to replace the drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the device power. Ensure you have the hard drive plugged in and it's powered on.

    • 2

Check that the data cable is connected to the computer and the hard drive. Occasionally, these cables appear connected, but they are loose and contact is not made between the device and the cable. Plug the cables in securely.

    • 3

Check the partition in Disk Manager. Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Run." Type "compmgmt.msc" in the textbox and click "Ok." This opens Disk Manager. In the window, check the external drive. If the partition is not displayed or the drive is not listed, the issue is more likely from cabling or device drivers.

Reinstall drivers. Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Run." Type devmgmt.msc" to open Device Manager. Right-click the USB port and select "Uninstall." Reboot the computer and Windows automatically reinstalls the USB drivers.

Ensure you have the latest service pack. Windows XP has service packs needed for stability. The most important service pack is number two. Download Service Pack 2 at windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
