Getting a clean puppy can be a major hassle if your pooch hates the water. Spare yourself hours of hide and seek and your pup a nervous breakdown by following a few simple steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dog Shampoo
  • A designated towel
  • A washcloth
  • A sink or tub that is just a bit bigger than your dog
  • Dog brush
  • Cat comb
  1. Step 1

Brush your dog BEFORE the bath as it will lessen the tangles afterwards and help you get to the dirt easier. Use the cat comb to clean around the eyes, by gently holding your dog's head under your arms and with one hand.

  2. Step 2

Lay a small towel or washcloth at the bottom of the sink or tub. This will keep your nervous dog from slipping and feeling out of control.

  3. Step 3

Make the water warm enough to feel good against the inside of your wrists. If it feels uncomfortable to you, chances are, it will be uncomfortable for the dog too. Remember that they run warmer than us!

  4. Step 4

Place your dog in the sink/tub and gently pour the water from the shoulders to the tail of the dog. Speak to your dog and tell it how great it's doing. Stay close so it doesn't feel abandoned, or that the water is bad. Let the tub/sink fill half way.

  5. Step 5

Quickly and briskly spread the shampoo on the dog and lather it from neck to tail, on top and on it's stomach. Continue to croon to your dog and tell it how well it's doing. If your dog is still nervous, now is a good time for a small treat.

  6. Step 6

Drain out the extra water and wash your dogs feet. Rinse by pouring the watcher over the dog's back, keeping the dog warm.

  7. Step 7

Finally, hold up your dog's head and gently pour water over it's head, allowing it to trickle down, away from the dog's nose and eyes. Briskly wash the dog's head, rubbing soapy hands around the eyes and snout at the end. Cup fresh water in your hands and rub away the soap around the eyes and snout. Pouring water directly into the dog's face and nose area will make your dog more nervous.

  8. Step 8

Make sure the soap is completely rinsed clean and use your hands to squeeze out any extra water. Drain any remaining water and allow your dog to shake off the extra water by telling it "shake." This will train your dog to wait for this cue. Reward your dog with a treat and praise as you wrap the dog.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wash quickly and briskly
  • Make sure you have plenty of fresh warm water handy
  • Continue talking to your dog and praising it for good behavior
  • Don't pour the shampoo directly onto your dog. Rub it between your hands for maximum efficiency and speed
