In this article people can learn exactly how to groom a horse in preparation for a show. Your horse will be the tidiest horse at the show, as well as the shiniest.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Shampoo
  • Scraper
  • Soft Brush
  • Mane/Tail Comb
  • Show Sheen
  • Rubber Bands
  • 2 Clean Towels
  • Hoof Pick
  • Hoof Polish
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

    Give Your Horse A Bath:
Rinse your horse off completely from head to toe. If your horse doesn't like their face being rinsed then skip their head and do it separately. After you have rinsed your horse off use a sponge full of shampoo and scrub everywhere on the horses body EXCEPT the mane. It is easier to braid a mane when it is dirty. After fully shampooing the horses body, be sure to rinse it all out. Use a scraper to get the excess water off. Since you have just given your horse a bath let them dry in a stall or out in a grass field. Don't let them near any dirt or mud or sand paddocks!

  2. Step 2

    Grooming The Body:
Once they have dried use a soft brush to brush over the horses body. Add show sheen after making sure to cover your horse EXCEPT on the MANE, SADDLE AREA AND GIRTH AREA. Add hoof polish to their toes after picking them for a good shine. Using clippers or scissor, gently squeeze the horses ears together and cut off the hair that sticks out. Also using clippers or scissors trim off all whiskers from your horses muzzle. Using a clean towel rub gently in your horses nose to clean out snot. Lastly run a clean towel down the horses body to collect dust.

  3. Step 3

    Tail and Mane:
The tail should be tangle free and loaded with show sheen. Clip the horses tail about an inch at the bottom. Their mane should be fully braided. *See my how to braid article* Cut off any strangling hairs. Your horses bridle path should be trimmed down as much as possible.

Tips & Warnings
  • Horses are unpredictable so if you don't feel comfortable completing any of these steps ask someone more experienced to help you!

on 8/24/2009 Lots of work! When you give a brown horse the "spa treatment" it's one thing. But when the horse is white or light gray, it's a whole other thing. Right? And never let them out after a bath. They roll and dig and roll some more. Thanks for the description.
