Whether you are preparing to visit a foreign country or you are wanting to learn a foreign language for fun, this article will show you how to learn a foreign language naturally by using the immersion method.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, understand what the immersion method is.

The immersion approach to learning a foreign language tries to expose you to a foreign language as much as possible by integrating the foreign language into your daily life as much as possible. The immersion method is a popular method for learning a foreign language since it's a natural way to learn a new language. Growing up, we all learned our own native language by being completely immersed by adults around us speaking and communicating with each other.

  2. Step 2

Next, to prepare to immerse yourself in the new language, buy tools neccessary to aid you as you pick up new keys and phrases you'll encounter. Some basic books you'll find extremely useful when learning (and even when traveling) are dictionaries, phrase books, or instructional language books as well.

  3. Step 3

Next, being to integrate the foreign language into your daily life by beginning to watch and listen to various media types in the new language. This means watch TV shows and listen to radio shows in the foreign language (in the car or online). Another popular way to immerse yourself easily is by listening to podcasts in the foreign language. Podcasts are also great ways to learn a language using the immersion method. Foreign newspapers and magazines often have websites in the foreign language as well which can add to your knowledge of the new language. By reading, listening, singing, watching shows in the new language, you'll begin to start subconsciously learning to parse words from the sentences and pick up associations with phrases throughout the day in your downtime.

  4. Step 4

Next, after beginning an initial immersion in different media types, interact with people who speak the foreign language you are trying to look. Look for communities of people who speak the foreign language or anyone who may be interested in doing a language exchange with you. These can be formal gatherings with groups of people or individual lunches where you practice conversing over a meal.

  5. Step 5

Finally, the best way to get completely immersed in the language is by traveling to a country where the foreign language is the main form of communication. For example, if you are trying to learn German, visiting Germany would be an idea place to visit. Having to interact on a daily basis while relying on the new language will force you to rapidly learn the foreign language. You'll even find you'll begin to start thinking and picking up the foreign language extremely quickly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bringing your language dictionary with you can be helpful to look up words on the spot

on 8/14/2009 Thanks for the cool article on how to naturally learn a foreign language. I like the idea of podcasts because you can listen to them over and over if you want for things you miss and just to get used to the way the language sounds. 5*
