How to Come Up With a Retirement Plan

How to Come Up With a Retirement Plan thumbnail
Saving money can assure you a secure old age.

Planning for retirement can never start too early. The younger you are when you begin putting away money for your later years, the larger your savings will grow by the time you retire. Ensuring your own comfort after retirement calls for a combination of adequate income and reasonable expenditure. If you plan to remain in the same home after retirement, you will need to make plans to cover the taxes, insurance and maintenance costs, as well as the mortgage if you are still paying it off.

Instructions

    • 1

Join a 401k retirement plan if your employer offers one. Not doing this is basically giving away money, even though it's money that you won't get for a number of years.

    • 2

Invest in a traditional individual retirement account (IRA) and contribute to it every year. Any tax you are required to pay on the income you put into a traditional IRA will be deferred until you withdraw the money after retirement. You can also invest in a Roth IRA. With a Roth, you contribute with after-tax money, but your withdrawals in retirement are tax-free.

    • 3

Cut back on unnecessary expenses and impulse spending. This will allow you to save more money for retirement, as well as get you into the habit of living more frugally in preparation for a time when you will have a lower income.

    • 4

Pay down your mortgage. The more quickly you can complete the mortgage, the less money you will put into it in interest. Having a house that is completely paid for offers a sound basis for financial security.

    • 5

Invest in a diversified portfolio with any extra money you may have. Consult with a financial professional about putting your money into secure and reasonably profitable assets, stocks and securities that will help to support you after retirement. Some investments that have historically shown both stability and profitability are real estate and annuities.
