Today, I will go through step by step how to shift gears when riding a motorcycle. Shifting gears on a motorcycle is easier then on a car. So let’s get started, just follow the steps below to continue.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

This is how the gears are set up. All the way down is first gear. Do a half click for neutral. Then is second, third, all the way up to gear five.

  2. Step 2

All you are really doing is clicking up or down. No need to go sideways like a car.

  3. Step 3

So to get the bike in first gear, make sure the clutch is engaged. Push down on the gear lever until it doesn’t click anymore. You are now in first gear.

  4. Step 4

To get it in neutral from there, depress the clutch and push the lever slightly up. A light should come on when the bike is in neutral.

  5. Step 5

To get in second gear, give the bike some gas, ease off the throttle, pull in the clutch and then shift up.

  6. Step 6

Once in gear, release the clutch smoothly. Hit the throttle.

  7. Step 7

To downshift, do the same procedure to shift up except you will shift down instead. Be careful when downshifting. Downshifting the bike in a lower gear at a higher speed can put a lot of pressure on the engine which could damage it. So that’s it, you are done.
