The Hammond B-3 organ, introduced in the 1950s remains a favorite instrument for jazz, pop, rock and gospel music. The Hammond electric organs built before 1975 featured a double-switch to start the two motors. Electronic models built after 1976 use a single power switch/button like other organs.

Balance yourself on the organ bench and find the two toggle-switches on the right-hand side of the instrument. The word "Off" is inscribed beneath each switch. Above the left-hand switch is the word "Start" and above the other is the word "Run."

Firmly push forward the "Start" switch (the left-hand switch) of the Hammond Organ and hold it securely for 20 or more seconds with your forefinger. This will activate the first of two small motors and allow oil to be released into the motors. You will hear the sound of the motor as it starts. Continue to hold the switch through the next step.

    • 3

Use your third finger to push forward the right-hand "Run" switch. This will activate the second small motor needed to run the instrument. Hold both switches for several seconds.

    • 4

After a few seconds, slowly release both switches. The "Start" switch will move back to the "Off" position. You have now activated both motors that allow the Hammond organ to run.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you push the "Run" switch first, you will hear an unpleasant grinding sound, or even a popping noise.
