How to Change a Forwarding Address
Changing your forwarding address is one of those little tasks often overlooked in the moving process. The United States Postal Service provides an online form, allowing you to register the forwarding address where you want to receive your mail. If you don't have computer access, go to your local Post Office, where you can fill out a forwarding address form or ask your postal carrier for the form.

1
Log on to www.USPS.com. This is the website for the United States Postal Service. The USPS website provides an option for mail forwarding. Choose mail forwarding if you need to forward your mail for 6 months or less. You may extend your mail forwarding period an additional 6 months if necessary, for a total of 12 months.

2
Click the mail forwarding link. The USPS immediately informs you that there is a $1 debit or credit card charge incurred to change your forwarding address. After you accept the $1 fee, fill in the date that you want to start having your mail forwarded to your new or temporary address.

3
Enter the date that the mail forwarding will end. This is the date on which mail will start being delivered to your old address again. You must have your mail forwarded for at least 15 days. Of course, if your living situation changes, you can always change your forwarding address to reflect your current address. If your move is permanent, you should complete a change of address form instead of a forwarding address form.

4
State if your move is for a business, individual or an entire family. If your change of forwarding address is for a whole family, every family member needs to have the same last name and be moving to the same location. If the move is for a business, only an official representative of the business is authorized to make such changes.

Complete the forwarding address form. It will ask your old mailing address followed by your new mailing address including city, state and zip code. Fill in your email address if you have one for confirmation purposes. Enter your debit card information to cover the $1 fee, and click submit.
