Learn the basics. Don't try to tackle learning Spanish by simply entering a chat room and trying to talk. Be sure that you have the fundamentals of Spanish down first, or you will quickly become discouraged. There are several classes you can take for free at community centers or online. You can also check out language learning software such as Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone.

Choose the right site. Once you have a firm grasp of Spanish vocabulary and grammar, choose the appropriate website. Do not select a site that is too steeped in slang or hostile to foreigners.
