Chlorhexidine gluconate is a chemical antiseptic sold under many different brand names depending on its application and is effective against a variety of yeast and bacteria. Use chlorhexidine gluconate as the active ingredient in an oral rinse. This use kills bacteria immediately and also has a prolonged bactericidal effect due to its absorption into the enamel of the teeth. A solution of chlorhexidine gluconate can therefore improve halitosis (bad breath) and may also be recommended as a treatment for gingivitis. These preparations of chlorhexidine gluconate are sold under the brand names Peridex and Periogard. Users should be aware that the long-term use of chlorhexidine gluconate can stain teeth and change the sense of taste.
