How to Add Window Trim to a Marble Sill

A marble windowsill is an unusual architectural detail that deserves to be seen. It shouldn't have to compete for attention with some ornate molding when it's time to hang new or replacement trim around the sill and window. One solution is a simple flat trim affixed under the marble sill and extending up around the rest of the window. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Enough flat trim to surround the window
  • Miter saw
  • Drill with pilot bit
  • Hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the sill underneath its lowest point, from edge to edge. Transfer that measurement to a piece of trim, starting the measurement six inches in from one side and putting both marks on the top edge of the trim.

    • 2

Lay the trim on your miter saw with the marked edge up and facing the fence of the saw. For the right-side cut, swivel the saw blade 45 degrees to the right, and cut from the mark outward. For the left-side cut, swivel the blade 45 degrees to the left and cut from the mark outward. The marked top edge of the trim should be shorter than the bottom edge, with outward miter cuts on both sides.

    • 3

Hold the trim under the marble sill, lined up with the bottom of it. Drill pairs of pilot holes on the top and bottom edges of the trim every foot or so. Hammer in trim nails, setting the heads with your nailset.

    • 4

Set your level across the top of the window, a quarter-inch outside the edge of the frame where it meets the window. Draw a line all the way across. Then use the level to draw plumb vertical lines from the outer edges of the sill upward, intersecting with the top line.

    • 5

Measure all three lines and cut three mitered pieces of trim as before to fit on the lines. Nail them to the wall as before, pressing the mitered edges together to form the corners.

    • 6

Caulk around the perimeter and the inside of all the trim. Include a caulk line between the top edge of the bottom piece of trim where it meets the marble sill. The frame is ready for painting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear eye protection when using your miter saw.
