How to Learn Ambidexterity

Michelangelo's astounding artwork created a place for him in history. But what many people are not aware of is that he was ambidextrous. Ambidexterity means that you are able to use your left and right hands equally and with ease to perform tasks. If you are like most people, you prefer a certain hand to do tasks such as buttering bread, twisting a bottle cap, brushing your teeth, and combing your hair. This hand is known as your dominant hand, whereas the other hand is known as the opposite hand. Each time that you need to perform a task, you consciously switch to your dominant hand. But with practice and some patience, you can become ambidextrous.

Use your opposite hand as often as possible. When you normally use your dominant hand, switch to your opposite hand. It may feel a little strange at first, but with practice you will get over this funny feeling.

    • 2

Write with your opposite hand. Try scribbling and making lines on the paper. This will help you feel comfortable holding the pencil in the opposite hand. Try writing the alphabet in large letters. As you improve, practice writing the alphabet in small letters. Practice writing the alphabet each day.

    • 3

Practice writing one paragraph a day. Keep your practice papers so you can see how much you are improving. You should notice some improvement each day.

    • 4

Add another paragraph to your practice regimen. Try to write more paragraphs each week. Your penmanship and comfort level holding the pencil should get better as you practice.

    • 5

Do a hobby or play a sport with the opposite hand. For example, use the opposite hand when shooting or dribbling a ball. If you crochet, put the crochet needle in the opposite hand. Make sure that you don't accidentally switch to your dominant hand.

    • 6

Incorporate these techniques when you eat food. Hold your spoon with your opposite hand and grab your fork with your dominant hand.

    • 7

Get dressed with your opposite hand. Put your socks on with the opposite hand. Button up your shirt or blouse with your opposite hand. Note how many things you can do with your opposite hand.

    • 8

Put on your belt in the opposite direction that you normally do. Put the belt through your loops with your opposite hand.

    • 9

Train your brain to become ambidextrous by using both hands to perform tasks. Stir two cups of liquid with both of your hands at the same time. Bounce two balls at the same time with both of your hands. Try writing with both of your hands at the same time.
