How to Use Emulsifying Wax

Emulsifying wax is one of the main ingredients in body creams and lotions. It is an essential for making these types of body products at home. The emulsifying wax is what holds everything together by keeping the liquid (water) and oils from separating. Emulsifying wax is one of the most common emulsifiers used by hobbyists.   • Ingredients for soap, cream or lotion

Instructions

    • 1

      Measure the emulsifying wax according to the body cream recipe and drop it into an electric wax melting pot.

      Melt the wax with other ingredients indicated in the body cream recipe and stir occasionally to prevent burning. The wax must be heated to 122 to 129 degrees F to melt.

      Remove from heat once the wax is melted completely and stir until smooth.

      Add oils and other ingredients to the melted wax and blend for emulsification to begin. The wax will hold the water and oils together and prevent separation.

      Whip the body cream until it is fluffy. Allow to cool completely and transfer to clean containers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Emulsifying wax is an emulsifier that also helps the body soak up the oils in the cream/lotion to absorb the moisture. Use an approved electric wax melter, crock pot or microwave to melt the emulsifying wax.

  • Emulsifying wax should never be melted on a stovetop over direct heat because it is flammable and will catch on fire if it comes in direct contact with a flame.
