How to Change an Address With the Post Office Online

Changing your home or business mailing address can be done online, and you can use the same online form to have your mail forwarded temporarily. The U.S. Postal Service recommends that you allow about two weeks to ensure your change of address is processed and your mail is forwarded to the right place.

Make sure you have the required information ready. You'll need your old and new addresses and the date you want to start having your mail forwarded. You also must have a valid email address and credit or debit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, or Diner's Club). If you don't have a credit or debit card, you can still download and print the change of address form, fill it out and take it to your post office.

Go to the United States Postal Service "Movers Guide" website (link below) to change an address with the post office online. You'll be asked to enter the starting date for forwarding your mail and whether the change is temporary. The online system also needs to know if the move is for an individual, family or business.

Enter your credit or debit card information. Either your old or new address must match the address on the card (for businesses it must be the old address). The USPS uses this as a means of verifying that the change of address is correct and legitimate. There is a nominal processing fee ($1 in 2009) that will be billed to the card.
