How Can I Make My Computer Boot Up Faster?

Waiting for your computer system to boot up can be an annoying task, but there are ways you can help reduce the loading time of your computer. Performing regular computer maintenance on your system will help minimize the system's boot-up time. You can also delete old or unused programs, defragment your hard drive and minimize the number of programs that start automatically when your computer boots. Like cars, computers need regular maintenance to run optimally.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your computer's "Add or Remove Programs" utility and scroll through the list to find any programs you do not use or need. Delete these programs to free your system from unnecessary clutter. New computers often have various trial software installed. This software can be removed if you do not plan on using the trial. Keep only the programs that you plan on using.

Disable programs that start automatically when your operating system is turned on. These programs run in your computer's background and contribute to longer booting times. In Windows, open the Microsoft Configuration utility by entering "msconfig" into the Run utility in the system's Start menu. Click on the "Startup" tab to view a list of programs that start with your operating system. Uncheck any programs that you do not wish to have run automatically. To access the startup programs list on a Mac operating system, select "System Preferences" from the Apple menu at the top left-hand corner of the screen. Select "Login Items" from the "Accounts" window and enter your user name and password. A list of your computer's startup programs will appear.

    • 3

Defragment and clean up your PC's hard drive by using the "Disc Defragment" and "Disc Cleanup" tools under the "System Tools" menu of the computer's "Accessories" folder. Mac operating systems are programmed to automatically optimize and defragment the hard drive, though programs such as iDefrag (see Resources) can be purchased to manually defragment your hard drive.

Clean your system's registry to diminish its size and improve the speed of your computer. Download a free program such as Advanced SystemCare (see Resources) or purchase a commercial product such as Registry First Aid (see Resources). These programs will evaluate and clean your system's registry, which can improve your system's booting time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Perform these steps routinely to optimize your computer's performance.
