Step 1
Locate a forked branch of live wood. Fruit trees and willow trees are preferred for making dowsing rods.

Cut the branch from the tree. Cut away all excess leaves and twigs from the forked branch.

Trim the dowsing rod so that it looks like a "Y". The bottom of your "Y" should be about four inches long and each arm of the "Y" should be about one foot.

Step 4
Hold the dowsing rod with both hands. Place one hand, palms up, on each branch of the "Y." Hold the dowsing rod parallel to the ground. Concentrating on the item you are searching for, walk along and wait for your dowsing rod to swing up or down, indicating that the item you are searching for may be underfoot.
