How to Treat Bone Disease

Bones are the organs that help us to move, provide shape and support, protect other organs and store minerals in the body. These are made up of dense connective tissues and occur in variety of sizes and shapes. Even though they are strong, hard and rigid, they are not heavy. Bone tissues are rebuilt frequently after wear and tear. This process happens throughout one's life and replaces the old tissue with new. The health of the bones depends on good calcium levels and vitamin D. There are many disorders and diseases related to bones. Some of the common diseases and disorders include: osteoporosis, arthritis, bone spur, bone tumor, metabolic bone disease, osteoarthritis and bone cysts.

Instructions

  1. Osteoporosis

    • 1

Understand osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease and causes low bone mass, which could result in deterioration of the basic skeletal structure. The low bone mass creates brittle bones, causing them to fracture easily. A common but dangerous result of osteoporosis is spine fracture. This can be very hard to notice and can be extremely traumatic.

    • 2

Use antiresportive drugs provided by your doctor. Antiresportive drugs reduce the speed of bone loss.

    • 3

Take bone-building agents. Bone-building agents are prescribed to increase the bone mass. Although there are some drugs available, research is still going on to develop good bone-building drugs.

    • 4

Perform exercises. The doctor usually recommends a patient suffering from osteoporosis exercise frequently.

    • 5

Take calcium-rich supplements in order to replace the calcium lost from the bones.

    Arthritis

    • 6

Understand arthritis. This is a joint disorder that is characterized by inflammation of a joint, which causes a lot of pain and difficulty in moving the joints. This hinders normal body movement. The types of arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and osteoarthritis.

    • 7

Practice physical therapy. The patient should undergo physical therapy to increase and improve range of motion.

    • 8

Exercise frequently. Exercising relives tension in the muscles and improves the range of motion. Doctors advise patients suffering from arthritis to undertake some physical activity.

    • 9

Take NSAIDS. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen are recommended to reduce the inflammation and pain. However, taking anti-inflammatory drugs can cause acidity and may result in stomach ulcers as well.

    • 10

Use pain relief treatments like water therapy and meditation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Several other bone diseases that are common include osteogenesis imperfecta and Paget's disease. Paget's disease has the adverse effect of causing skeletal deformities that often result in fractures. Bones are an important part of our bod,y and we need to take good care of them. Having a strong skeleton also helps in maintaining healthy body organs. Frequently exercising and consuming a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D should keep the bones healthy and strong.

  • Bone injuries can cause bones to become more brittle, leaving them more prone to diseases.
