Have you ever had something break or stop working while it was out of warranty. Don't panic, there still may be a way to get it fixed or have it replaced! It will may only cost you your time and effort. I have successfully got things fixed when out of warranty from major companies such as Apple, Dell, and Cuisinart.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • You will need a phone.
  • You need the customer service phone number for the company.
  • You can also use online customer service by a computer.
  1. Step 1

You have to try to remain calm. You won't get anywhere by being vulgar or yelling that your item is broken or not working properly.

  2. Step 2

Attempt to contact the customer service line for the product that is broken or not working properly. Try and locate a model number, serial number, or date of purchase. The more information you have, the easier the process will be.

  3. Step 3

While on the phone with customer service, remain calm, and speak to them nicely. I have dealt with many rude customer service representatives and have found the nicer you are, the better. Explain the problem you are having with the product. Don't mention it is out of warranty.

  4. Step 4

If the representative tells you that can't do anything because it is out of warranty, ask to speak to their supervisor or manager. You will probably have to go up the chain of command to get someone who can make an exception.

  5. Step 5

When you get to the next level of management on the phone, be sure to ask for their name and title. Make sure you are talking to a supervisor or manager. Tell them your problem, remind them that you are a great customer, and that many people you know use their product.

  6. Step 6

If the company still refuses to help you, remind them of all the customers they may lose because you will be telling everyone of their poor service and products. Also, ask for their name again, and let them know you will be writing a letter with their information in it.

  7. Step 7

Always know the retail cost of your item verses the cost of repair. Sometimes it may be easier just to buy a new item.

  8. Step 8

Many companies allow for a grace period if you are past the warranty. Don't forget to ask the supervisor or manager if they are not helping you as a last resort.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always ask for names or identification numbers. In case you have to make a further complaint or write a letter, it helps to have that information.
  • Good luck and try to be cordial!
  • You may have to pay a small fee such as shipping and handling. This may cost you to get something fixed or repaired out of warranty but is sometimes worth it.
