Step 1
Go to your school's financial aid office and pick up an application for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This packet can be obtained at almost any college. You can also apply on line for free at teh fafsa.ed.gov website.
-
Step 2
Talk to someone in the financial aid office for any help with the application. They may know if you qualify for other grants, work study, or loans that can help you pay for college. You can also look on line at www.ed.gov, and grants.gov for other federal grant opportunities you may qualify for.
-
Step 3
Turn in your financial aid and grant applications as early as possible. More common student grants like the Pell grant are easier to obtain than some other grants, but there is still only a limited amount of federal grant money to give away every year, and competition is high. Fill out your applications as early as January for the following school year, and you will be in a better position to receive some grant money for college. It is not guaranteed.
